Mrs Sylvia Wise’s earliest memory is of breaking her baby sister’s leg when she dropped her on the floor. The 79 year old widow from Poole said “It was terrible, she had a broken leg and had to be taken to hospital, I definitely got a good hiding after that.” June Wise, eighteen months old at the time, had to have her leg set in a plaster cast and it was left to mend for months, which Mrs Wise said she felt very guilty about.
Mrs Wise was a former nurse for the Royal Navy; she trained all over the UK before being dispatched to as far away as Hong Kong. “Some of my fondest and saddest memories are from my travels,” It was in Hong Kong that her first marriage ended in tragedy. The test pilot she had been wedded to for only 3 weeks was killed in a plane accident. “It was a very difficult time; we had only been married for three weeks when the plane he was testing crashed,” The mother of four and grandmother of seven lost her second husband of 50 years, in 2006, to cancer.
